WHAT IS FALCON?
Fostering Aerospace Leaders through Collaboration Opportunities Nationwide (FALCON) is a single-semester, conceptual payload design challenge geared toward younger high school students. This program requires students to use the engineering design process to create a conceptual science payload which utilizes human (astronaut) interaction. Students will also create a physical model out of household items or 3D printed to represent their design. Students will also develop outreach activities (online/in-person) which capture certain aspects of their mission. At the end of the semester the students will present all of their findings to a professional engineering review panel at the competition held at UAH.
FALCON is a STEM outreach program based at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).
WHAT DO YOU GET?
Provided: online notebook, video lesson guides, bi-weekly engagement with UAH personnel (reviews virtual/in-person), & email support.
Topics Addressed: space science, critical decision-making, engineering design process, & communication.
Grade Level: 9-12, focus on 9th & 10th
Project Length: 15-16 weeks, ~1 hour per week, same content for both Fall/Spring, one competition per semester (awards provided and judges from professional fields like NASA, Blue Origin, Redstone Arsenal, etc.)
